Orthodontics
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. The word comes from the Greek words orthos meaning straight or proper, and odons meaning tooth.
Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. In the latter case it is better defined as "dentofacial orthopaedics".
However, there are some orthodontists who reconstruct the entire face. On the other hand, most treatment is prescribed for practical reasons, such as providing the patient with a functionally improved bite, also known as occlusion.
Proper occlusion is the key to better chewing, clearer speech, and good oral health. Misaligned teeth may cause many problems, such as difficulties in cleaning teeth, thereby increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, or overusing the muscles of mastication and hence headaches, TMJ syndrome, and thus aching neck and shoulder muscles. Therefore, orthodontic care not only means better appearance but improved health and functioning as well.
Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment
- Improved Aesthetics: A much-straighter smile enhances one's appearance and boosts self confidence.
- Better Oral Hygiene: This will straighten the teeth, hence easier to clean, and thus the risk of cavities and gum disease is reduced.
- Enhanced Functionality: This goes with properly aligned teeth and jaws, which are associated with improved biting, chewing, and speaking functions.
- Prevention of Dental Problems: It also helps in preventing dental problems, where correction of malocclusions prevents long-term dental issues that include dental wear down on surfaces, jaw pain, and TMJ disorders.
- Balanced Facial Structure: Orthodontic treatments, especially those involving dentofacial orthopaedics, can ensure a harmonious relationship between the teeth and facial bones, improving overall facial aesthetics.
Types of Orthodontic Treatments
- Braces: Traditional metal braces are the most common type, but ceramic braces and lingual braces (placed on the back of the teeth) are also options.
- Clear Aligners: These are a popular choice for adults and teens, as they are nearly invisible and can be removed for eating and cleaning.
- Retainers: Used after braces or aligners to maintain the new position of the teeth.
- Headgear: Sometimes used to correct severe bite problems by guiding the growth of the face and jaws.
- Palatal Expanders: Devices that widen the upper jaw to create more space for teeth alignment.
Orthodontics is a multidimensional specialty dealing with the aesthetic and functional aspects of dental care. It enhances the quality of life by correcting disorders at the tooth and jaw levels.
